Itinerary
Day 1 Cusco – Cusipata – Santa Lucia – Waqrapukara
The Waqrapukara Trek Full-Day Hike begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 4:00 a.m. From there, enjoy a scenic two-hour drive through the southern Andean highlands toward the town of Cusipata, passing beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional Andean villages along the way.
Upon arrival in Cusipata, enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast at a local restaurant. This is the perfect opportunity to warm up, use the restrooms, and prepare for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, we continue the journey for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes along a scenic unpaved road to the community of Santa Lucía. During the drive, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and the distant Pomacanchi Lagoon. From Santa Lucía, a final 30-minute drive takes us to the trailhead, where you will have time to organize your belongings and get ready before starting the hike.
The trek begins with a gradual ascent through open grasslands and impressive Andean landscapes. Walking at a comfortable pace, you will slowly gain elevation while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of hiking, you will reach the first panoramic viewpoint overlooking the magnificent Apurímac Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Peru. From this point, you will enjoy your first unforgettable view of Waqrapukara, the legendary Horned Fortress, dramatically positioned on the edge of the canyon.
Once at the archaeological site, you will have approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to explore this incredible Inca sanctuary. Your guide will share the history, architecture, and cultural significance of Waqrapukara as you discover its ancient temples, ceremonial plazas, terraces, and impressive stone structures. Take time to capture stunning photographs, admire the famous horn-shaped rock formation, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this hidden treasure in the Andes.
After the guided visit, we begin the return hike along the same trail for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes until reaching the trailhead, where our transportation will be waiting.
From there, we drive back to Cusipata, where you will enjoy a well-deserved buffet lunch at a local restaurant. This is the perfect moment to relax, recharge, and reflect on the day’s adventure.
Following lunch, we begin the scenic drive back to Cusco, arriving at your hotel at around 6:30 p.m.
