Itinerary

Day 1 Cusco I Capuliyoc - Chiquisca - Playa Rosalina - Santa Rosa

We will pick you up early from your hotel and drive for 4 hours in our private transport to Capuliyoc (2,950 m /9,678 ft). On the way, we will have a short stop for breakfast. Then, we will continue to Capuliyoc. Along the way there are spectacular views of villages, valleys and snow-capped mountains. Once at Capuliyoc, we will meet our horsemen and horses and pack all our equipment onto the horses. You will carry a small daypack with the essentials you will need on the trail. Then, we will start walking all the way down for about four hours through the Apurimac Canyon to Chikisca (1,950 m / 6,398 ft), where we will have lunch. Along the way, you will get the first views of the Apurimac Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Peru. After lunch, we continue for two more hours to our first campsite at Santa Rosa (2,230 m / 7,300 ft), where we will enjoy dinner and spend the night.

Day 2 Santa Rosa I Marampata โ€“ Choquequirao - Marampata

After an early breakfast we will walk uphill for about four hours to Marampata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft) where we will have lunch while enjoying the spectacular views of the canyon and snow- capped peaks. After a brief rest, we will hike for two more hours to the archaeological site of Choquequirao (3,050 m/10,006 ft) located in the deep canyon.

On this day, we will explore all the most important sections of this incredible Inca site with plazas, temples, impressive platforms, llamasโ€™s section and more. It was one of the last Inca cities built in the cloud forest. We will have lunch at noon and have time to rest.

In the afternoon, we will return to your camp at Marampata for dinner and rest for the night.

Once the sun has set, you will notice that the Andean night sky will come alive with countless stars and constellations. You will contemplate their meaning before going to bed.

Day 3 Marampata I Santa Rosa - Playa Rosalina - Chiquisca

After breakfast, we will descend to the magnificent Apurimac River (1,550m/5,117ft) , a walk of about two hours until we reach Santa Rosa (2,230 m / 7,300 ft), lunch point. After lunch, we will continue our descent to Playa Rosalina and dip our feet and freshen up in the cold waters of Apurimac River. Finally, we will walk uphill for about 2 hours to our third campsite at Chiquisca (1,950 m / 6,398 ft), where we will spend the night and enjoy dinner.

Day 4 Chiquisca I Capuliyoc - Saywite - Cusco

After a delicious breakfast, we hike uphill from Chikisca towards the Capuliyoc . This part of hiking is demanding, once there, enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Apurimac Canyon. Then, we will take our transport and head to Cachora (2,850m/9,407ft) for lunch.

On the way back to Cusco, we will visit the archaeological site of Saywite (3,500 m / 11,483 ft), a great mysterious rock believed to be the complex irrigation system of the region.

We then return to Cusco and drop off at your hotel, arriving in the evening, around 6pm.

Is 4 days enough for Choquequirao?

Yes, 4 days is enough if youโ€™re fit and have limited time. This itinerary is designed to reach Choquequirao, explore the archaeological site in the afternoon, and return safely to Cusco.

If you prefer a slower pace and more time at the site, the Choquequirao Trek 5 Days may be a better option.

This trek is not ideal for complete beginners unless you are very active and well prepared. If youโ€™re new to multi-day trekking, we recommend training before your trip and arriving in Cusco at least two days early to acclimatize.

 

What is the highest altitude of the Choquequirao Trek?

The highest important point of the trek isย  approximately 3,050 m ( 10,006 ft.)The route also includes lower, warmer canyon areas, so temperatures can change a lot during the hike.

The total hiking distance is approximately 55 km (34 miles), with the trek starting and ending in Cusco.
